Student Michael Hassan remains hospitalized in a medically induced coma. Hassan’s parents were at the service and expressed their gratitude to the Lewis community in helping them cope with prayers towards Michael’s full recovery.
“I didn’t realize how many people my son has impacted,” said Hassan’s father. “Thank you all for being here. We really appreciate your prayers.”
Fifty-four year old Sherrard McKnight from North Carolina was arrested and accused of drunk driving while operating a semi truck. His truck slammed into several cars and a school bus outside of Lewis.
Emily Brabham, University Minister and Coordinator of Social Justice Formation, started a GoFundMe to raise $10,000 to support Michael. Within one week, the goal has almost been reached. Around $9,843 was raised of the $10,000 goal by over 241 donors.
“Mike deeply cares,” said Brabham. “He cares about social justice, his studies, his friends, the planet, his family. He is brave and he deeply cares. As I was writing this list, I realized that all of the reasons I love Mike are all the same reasons we love Mike. Mike brought us here together, right now because of all the reasons we love him.”
Brabham also started a Caring Bridge, which allows people facing various medical conditions and their family and friends to communicate online creating a personal health journal. Michael has impacted so many students, faculty and staff at Lewis.
Members of the community have really shown how humanity and prayer makes a difference when we are faced with unfortunate circumstances.
CBS 2 covered the prayer service and reported details about the accident.
